Syd Field’s Screenplay: The Foundations of Screenwriting popularised the idea of dividing up a play into three acts. In Act One we have “The Set-Up”, before Act Two – “The Confrontation” and concluding with Act Three – “The Resolution”. Once the dominant themes and characters are set, a problem arises at the conclusion of the first act. Solving this problem form the basis of our second act. The protagonist has to learn new skills, and develop personally in order to ensure a successful conclusion to the narrative in act three.
